How to apply for a position or scholarship

ApplyKite finds the opportunity and helps you prepare. You apply on the university's or funder's own website. Here's how, step by step.

1. Read the listing

Check that it fits your field, level, country and deadline. Then read the funding, the requirements and how to apply.

2. Check you're eligible

Select Check my eligibility in the ApplyKite Twin box beside the listing. It compares each requirement with your profile and tells you what to settle first. See Eligibility check.

3. Find the official page

Select Continue to application to go to the official page. Some listings have several links, so look for the university's or funder's own application portal.

If a link doesn't work:

  • look for the programme on the university's website;
  • check whether the deadline has passed;
  • select Report a problem on the listing so we can fix it.

4. Prepare your documents

Most applications ask for some of these:

DocumentMake it with
CVDocument drafting
Statement of purpose or motivation letterStatement of purpose
Research proposal (for PhDs)Research proposal
Cover letterDocument drafting
Email to the supervisorEmail a professor
Transcripts, degree certificates, language testYour university and test centre
Reference lettersYour referees: ask early

Ask the Twin on the listing What documents do I need? for a list for that one opportunity.

5. Submit, then track it

Submit on the official portal and double-check everything before you send it. Then set the status to Applied in your Tracker and note the date. Practise for the interview with Interview practice.

Tips

Can I apply without a language certificate? Sometimes. Some programmes accept a conditional application and the result later. The requirements on the listing say which.

How many places should I apply to? Most students apply to 10 to 20 programmes, and more for very competitive fields like funded PhDs.

Would you like help with the whole application? A mentor can guide you, or our team can apply for you for eligible programmes.
